More often than not, they also suffer appetite loss and abnormal weight decrease. As caregivers, we are at loss on what we can do to deal with the situation.

Fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals. Citrus fruits are rich in Vitamin C. Bananas are rich in Potassium. You can add fruits in their daily meal. Depending on the needs of your senior patient, you can serve them different kinds of fruits every day. You can have berries or melon instead of the usual banana or apples. As much as possible, fruits must be served twice or thrice a day. When you serve fruits, make sure that they’re ready to eat. You can also make fruit juices and shakes.
Aside from vitamins and minerals, most vegetables are also rich in anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants help your patients remove toxins inside their body. Vegetables can be served as a salad, or it can be an ingredient for a main dish. Serve at least 2-3 cups of vegetable per day.
- High-Protein diet
If you’re elderly patient has kidney problems or diabetes, opt for a high protein diet. It helps reduce stress, depression, and anxiety. Instead of relying on red meat, try introducing other high-protein sources. You can have more fish, peas, eggs, cheese, seeds, nuts, beans, and milk on their diet. Avoid giving them carbohydrate-rich foods. Instead of giving them baked products for dessert, swap them with seeds and nuts or Greek yogurt.
Most elderly people usually suffer from bone loss or osteoporosis. It is best that you prevent it before it affects them. Add more kale broccoli, almonds, and tofu into their diet. You can also ask their doctors recommendations on powdered milk that is high on calcium. You can also serve cheese and yogurt as their dessert.
- Healthy fats
Fats contain a large amount of calories. Calories keep you full for a longer period. For the elderly, it is critical that they only take in healthy fats. Healthy fats keep them away from craving sweets and indulging in foods that are not good for them. You can serve fish that have high polyunsaturated fats which include Omega-3. Omega 3 is a fatty acid which is good for the heart. You can also serve avocados, nuts, and seeds which are rich in monounsaturated fats.
When establishing a diet for your patient, it is very important that you know which vitamin should be taken. In this way, it can help you encourage them to eat more. It is best that you consult with their doctor to ensure that you are giving them the right vitamins and minerals that they need. Their diet must be set according to their medical condition and health needs.
